Most of our Bolivian projects are once again receiving funds. A majority of schools are still open, and the children are receiving the support that they need. Some paperwork has been delayed by the recent mail strike (which ended on April 21), so your children's letters may arrive much later than they normally would. This delay, however, is for the most part no longer affecting our ability to send money to Bolivia. If you have questions about a specific project, please contact Magda Kegley, Director of the Latin American Division, at (800) 538-5381.

According to a 2003 report by the US Census Bureau, 24% of the children in Lexington, Kentucky live below the federal poverty line. Children, Incorporated has been involved with one Lexington school since 2006, and we hope to affiliate with more in the near future. Ron Carter, director of the Inner City Division, is currently visiting schools throughout Kentucky, and expanding the Lexington program is among his top priorities. We will keep our supporters updated as we develop these partnerships.

The expansion of the St. John Community Center in Kenya is almost complete. The new building is only in need of final touches and paint, and it is due to be finished on March 28th of 2008. This addition will open up terrific new possibilities for the center. It includes 12 new classrooms as well as space for a library, offices, and workshops in such trades as carpentry, metals, hair dressing, and home economics.

Recently one of our Appalachian youngsters, Melinda, needed to have emergency heart surgery. Children, Incorporated sent a special gift to help the family.
Melinda's mother wrote gratefully, “My husband has been out of work for three months. With four children, it has been hard. The fact that Melinda has a serious heart condition makes things even more difficult. Your gift helped us with groceries, gas, and my daughter’s recent stay in the hospital. Please tell your donors that I cannot thank them or Children, Incorporated enough.”

The American Indian Division maintains three projects near Page, Arizona. The town of Page was founded in 1957 as a housing camp for workers building the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. Page is one of the youngest communities in the United States.
The Navajo people represent the largest segment of the population in the Glen Canyon area. The reservation adjacent to Page contains more than 16 million acres (27,000 square miles) and extends into both Utah and New Mexico. Today the Navajo Nation is home to about 200,000 tribal members. While incorporating many aspects of modern technology, some Navajos retain their traditional lifestyles as farmers and sheep herders.
Despite an ancient history and revered culture, the economy of Page is weak and high unemployment and social problems fuel a cycle of poverty that has existed for many years.
